In the middle of the Covid crisis, a new testing lab required a waste management company who could mobilise an extensive site in just 48 hours. By providing true on-site segregation and arranging waste collections 7 days a week, we committed to 100% diversion from landfill, despite managing waste from up to 50,000 tests per day.

Commercial waste services during a national crisis.

At the height of the global pandemic, B&M Waste (now rebranded as Panda and part of our Group) was given just 48 hours to mobilise a COVID-19 testing centre in Charnwood, Loughborough. The 24-hour laboratory needed to be ready to carry out 20,000 tests per day, rising to 50,000 tests per day by January 2021.

EMCOR employs a strategic and flexible approach to the needs of its clients, and our response to EMCOR needed to be equally flexible in the face of the tightest of deadlines. It was a unique situation requiring a highly tailored solution with a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness on our part.

We rose to the challenge with the sense of urgency that the project demanded, creating a bespoke solution within the shortest possible timeframe. We needed to provide EMCOR UK with a simple yet effective solution for the removal of different waste streams, including the very considerable volumes of clinical waste from the tests, plus general waste, cardboard and mixed recycling from the laboratories.

An effective business waste management solution

Drawing on 35 years of experience and our deep local knowledge and national scale, we undertook an in-depth site audit to ensure we put forward a solution that was tailored to the requirements of a 24-hour COVID-19 testing centre, with an extra-strong requirement for clinical waste disposal.
Our solution comprised providing 10-yard Front End Loaders (FELS) for the general and cardboard waste and 1100L bins for the mixed recycling from the labs.
For the clinical waste, 770L bins were placed on site and tags given for the bins to be able to easily differentiate between waste for incineration and alternative treatment. The number of bins increased as the volume of testing increased over time, and daily bin collections and exchanges were scheduled and effected.
Signage was also provided for each of the different waste streams on the site so that all employees were aware of what type of waste went into each of the different containers.
It was apparent from the start that more cardboard was being generated than had been anticipated. In response, we increased the number of cardboard FELs on site and placed a 40-yard RORO container to accommodate the excess.
