Fuelling innovation: New CNG station to support Ireland’s low-carbon transport shift

Ireland’s transport sector is evolving, and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are central to that transition. While passenger vehicles move steadily toward electrification, the freight sector faces different challenges, requiring alternative fuels that are practical and scalable. At Panda, we’re helping to meet that need with the launch of our new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling station at Cappagh, Dublin 11, delivered in partnership with Gas Networks Ireland. Officially opened by Minister for Climate, Environment, Energy, and Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD, the station marks an important national milestone, bringing the total number of public CNG stations in Ireland to 12.

Building infrastructure for action

We’re not just investing in our fleet; we’re investing in systems that make lower-carbon transport viable for everyone. This station is part of a larger shift, enabling HGV operators across sectors to access cleaner fuels and reduce emissions at scale.

For Panda, the station immediately supports operations in the Fingal area, where 32 CNG-powered vehicles are already on the road. That number will rise to 56 over the next two years, helping us progress toward net zero for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040.

The bigger picture: Decarbonising HGV transport

While HGVs represent just 3% of Irish vehicles, they contribute around 20% of transport emissions. That imbalance is exactly why the sector is such a critical focus in Ireland’s climate strategy.

The newly launched GRAZE grant scheme, administered by Gas Networks Ireland, provides up to €10,000 per vehicle, covering up to 40% of the cost difference between diesel and gas-fuelled HGVs. In its first phase, 75 grants are available, providing meaningful support for businesses looking to switch.
