At Panda, International Women’s Day is more than just a date. It is a moment to pause, celebrate, and proudly talk about the progress we are making to build a workplace where women can thrive.
As a waste management provider, we are proving we are about so much more than bins and trucks. We are about people. We are about innovation. And we are about creating a more sustainable future powered by diverse voices and bold leadership.
Why International Women’s Day matters to us
We want to take International Women’s Day as a chance to recognise the impact women have made, and continue to make, across every industry.
Waste and recycling have traditionally been male-dominated sectors, but that is changing. And it is because talented, ambitious, resilient women are stepping forward, leading teams, driving trucks, managing sites, shaping strategy, and transforming our industry from the inside out. Recognising women’s achievements in historically male-dominated fields is not just important, it is essential. When women are supported, empowered and given equal opportunity, everyone benefits.
And as April Willoughby, our Head of Property, Construction, Sales Strategy & Transformation, puts it:
“By supporting women in leadership, we are building impact.”
So much more than just bins and trucks
We operate in a challenging sector. Attracting and retaining talent is not always easy. But that challenge brings opportunity.
Across Panda Ireland and the UK, women are now working in key roles at every level of the business, from senior leadership to operational positions on the ground. We have female drivers, weighbridge operators, transport leads, managers and business leaders. Women are no longer confined to administrative or support roles. They are shaping the future of our industry.
As Anna Gary, Head of Operations Technology, reflects on her journey, she notes:
“Traditionally, waste was seen as a male-dominated space. Today, we are seeing more women at the helm of companies and in operational roles across the sector.“
What inspires Anna most is the drive, passion and strength of character she sees in the women she works with every day. Her advice?
“Work hard. If a role requires 100 percent, give 110 percent. Make your voice heard. Do not be afraid to step forward.“
Why we need more women in waste
If we want real change, we need more women at the table.
Women make up more than 50 per cent of the population and workforce. As our economy evolves, new skills, new perspectives and multi-generational thinking will be critical to staying competitive. Research consistently shows that women are often the driving force behind recycling and eco-awareness in the home. That insight is invaluable in an industry working to shift society’s attitudes toward waste and sustainability.
To build a more sustainable future, we need newly qualified graduates, experienced professionals, innovators and problem-solvers. We need fresh ideas and diverse perspectives. We need more women.
Supporting women’s health and wellbeing
At Panda, health and wellbeing are embedded in how we work.
As a result, with the theme of International Women’s Day in 2026 being “Give to Gain”, we are taking the opportunity within Panda to introduce something new. To allow all of our colleagues to give something back, we are creating a “Buddy Scheme” within the business. This will allow willing colleagues to buddy-up with new starters in their areas and offer advice and support when new colleagues join our business. This is a great opportunity for colleagues to get involved and offer our support to make sure our new joiners are as supported as possible, in their first few weeks and months.
At the same time, we actively raise awareness around women’s health, including breast cancer awareness and Women’s Health Month initiatives. We have also introduced a menopause and andropause policy that promotes understanding, flexibility and open dialogue.
Menopause is a natural transition that can bring physical symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and sleep disruption, alongside emotional symptoms like anxiety, mood swings and brain fog. It deserves understanding and support in the workplace. Our policy extends care to everyone affected, including partners and those experiencing andropause. Training is ongoing to ensure managers and colleagues understand how to provide meaningful support.
Because inclusion means recognising real-life experiences and responding with empathy.
Creating impact beyond our business
Our commitment to women extends into the communities we serve.
We proudly support initiatives such as the Women’s Recovery Hike at Glencullen, organised by Get Up Adventures. This initiative provides a safe, supportive space for women navigating mental health challenges to connect with nature and with one another.
Sustainability is not just environmental. It is social. It is human. It is about creating spaces where people can recover, grow and thrive.
Building the future together
At Panda, sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do. As we evolve into a more united and cohesive organisation, we are investing in the growth and development of our people through targeted training and career progression opportunities. We are committed to building a workplace that celebrates difference, champions inclusion and empowers everyone to succeed. Ultimately, it is about getting the best person for the job. But to truly find the best, we need to ensure opportunity is visible, accessible and supported for all.
International Women’s Day gives us the platform. The real work happens every day. If you want to be part of an industry that is transforming, innovating and driving meaningful environmental change, we would love to hear from you. Visit our Panda Careers page to take the next step.
Let us build a more sustainable future. Together.
